Apple once stopped producing M2 chips
Apple is said to have suspended production of the M2 series chips in January and February as Mac sales plummeted.
According to The Elec (Korea), this is the first time Apple has stopped producing integrated chips in its marketed products. Production resumed in March, but output was only half that of the M1 chip in the same period last year.
The above move was quietly made by Apple and TSMC, but the leaked information was because TSMC did not send M2 production wafers to OSAT for testing in the first two months of the year. In addition, Amcona, a company specializing in packaging M2 chips, was also badly affected by missing orders for two months. This company’s packaging line is exclusively for Apple, unable to do other work.

During the financial report in February, Tim Cook, Apple CEO, admitted this is a difficult period for the company when revenue in the fourth quarter of 2022 decreased by 5% compared to the same period a year earlier.
Apple introduced the M2 chip in June 2022, equipped on the new 13-inch MacBook Pro and MacBook Air. In mid-January, Apple released more advanced versions of the M2 Pro and M2 Max for the 14-16-inch MacBook Pro and Mac mini.
The M2 chip series is considered to be one of the best processor chips on the market, so the two-month shutdown shows that the demand for computer purchases is much lower than Apple’s prediction.
